Botox® Q&A

How does Botox® work?

Botox® is delivered via a thin needle into muscles around problem areas in the face. Botox® is a purified form of the botulinum toxin. This injectable medication causes the targeted muscles to relax, preventing them from contracting and creating wrinkles. Botox® is ideal for smoothing the skin between the eyebrows, eliminating lines on the forehead, and reducing the appearance of crow’s feet around the eyes.

What are the benefits of Botox®?

Numerous sessions might be needed to reach the desired look, but the process is the same. Some of the advantages of Botox® are:

  • It’s fast and effective
  • It offers little discomfort
  • There is no downtime
  • It creates natural-looking results
  • There’s no decrease in sensation or numbness in treated areas
  • The effects of injections are reversible, lasting 3-9 months

Because it’s a nonsurgical approach, there’s no blood loss or incisions that would occur with a facelift.

Does Botox® hurt?

Botox® treatment is quick and virtually painless. Because it’s injected with a needle, patients are usually concerned with whether or not the procedure is painful. Fortunately, the needles used during Botox® treatment are often extremely small and only a tiny amount of medication is needed, causing a minimal amount of discomfort.

If you prefer, Dr. Tran can apply a topical anesthetic cream and/or ice compresses for several minutes before the treatment to numb the area.

What are the side effects of Botox® injections?

Like most medical procedures, Botox® comes with a few side effects, but they’re generally quite mild. You might feel slight pain or numbness around the injection site for a short period after the procedure.

How much Botox® do I need?

Every person is different, of course, and Dr. Tran can help you determine how many Botox® treatments you may need to reach the desired effect you’re looking for. Depending on the muscles that surround your unwanted wrinkles, the number of units to be injected for forehead wrinkles, between-the-eyebrow lines, and crow’s feet will vary.
