About Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a treatment that replenishes your body’s natural hormonal levels using hormones that are chemically identical to those naturally present in your body. (1) Hormones are cellular messengers that regulate certain functions. As you age, they can naturally become imbalanced, leading to the development of many unwanted symptoms. These often include concerns such as constant irritability, sleep disturbances, sexual difficulties, lapses in concentration, reduced bone density, and more.
What Hormones are Available?
During your treatment, your specialist can customize the hormones you receive to ensure they address each of your specific needs. They can alter each BHRT treatment to introduce estrogen, testosterone, estrogen blockers, or a combination of two different hormones.
- Estrogen: Estrogen is the primary female sex hormone, and it supports bone density, metabolism, and reproductive health. (2)
- Testosterone: Testosterone is the main male sex hormone. It is important for stabilizing your mood, as well as building up your physical strength and energy levels.
- Estrogen Blockers: Estrogen blockers consist of different hormones and enzymes that can reduce the effects of excess estrogen in the body. Our specialists primarily recommend these for men to help reduce excessively high levels of estrogen.
Benefits
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy offers several key benefits, including:
- Enhanced Energy: Addressing your hormonal deficiencies can restore your natural energy levels, allowing you to live each day more actively and fully.
- Heightened Libido: BHRT can elevate your sexual desire, function, natural lubrication, and sexual satisfaction.
- Elevated Mood: Your specialist can perform BHRT to help you improve and stabilize your mood, as fluctuating hormones can influence your emotional state. (3)
- Improved Bone Density: Elevating your estrogen levels can protect the strength and density of your bones. This is especially important for women, as menopause predisposes women to osteoporosis. (4)
- Alleviated Pain: Rebalancing your hormonal levels can reduce discomfort from hot flashes, poor sleep, muscle weakness, and more.
- Wide Application: BHRT can address numerous symptoms and side effects associated with hormonal imbalances across both men and women, including intimate concerns, poor sleep quality, constant irritability, and more.
- Personalized Solutions: Our team of specialists tailors each treatment plan around your concerns, personal goals, and baseline hormone levels to ensure your regimen is as effective as possible.
Candidates
You may be an ideal candidate for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy if you have developed several uncomfortable or bothersome symptoms as a result of declining or fluctuating hormonal levels. In men, these often manifest as:
- Thinning Hair
- Dry Skin
- Mood Swings
- Weight Gain
- Erectile Dysfunction
- Decreased Libido
- Inability to Focus
- Fatigue
- Anxiety
- Depression
On the other hand, many women struggle with:
- Loss of Bone Density
- Hot Flashes
- Night Sweats
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Mood Swings
- Thinning Hair
- Dry Skin
- Vaginal Dryness
- Decreased Libido
- Inability to Focus
- Other Menopause-Related Symptoms
To qualify for BHRT, you should be in good general health without underlying medical conditions that may affect your treatment regimen. It is also important that you hold realistic expectations regarding your results.
Our team does not recommend BHRT if you have a history of blood clots, liver disease, breast cancer, or ovarian cancer. During your personal consultation, your specialist will determine your readiness for BHRT.
Personal Consultation
The first step to restoring your sense of wellness is attending a personal consultation. During your personal consultation, your specialist will meet with you individually to explain what BHRT consists of, as well as assess your candidacy. They will ask you several questions about your medical history, personal concerns, and desired outcomes. They will also conduct certain tests to determine your baseline hormone levels.
Your specialist will use the information from this meeting to determine whether or not BHRT is right for you, and what the most effective approach will be. They will recommend testosterone or estrogen replacement, pellet therapy, or intramuscular injections. Throughout the consultation, your specialist will also dedicate time to answering and addressing any questions you may have about either BHRT or wellness treatments in general.
To schedule this consultation, please submit our online contact form. If you have any questions or would prefer speaking to a member of our team, please call our San Jose office at (408) 223-8818.
Procedure
When you arrive for your treatment, your specialist will meet with you and lead you to a private treatment room where they will cleanse and sanitize your skin. From there, they will either insert a pellet or inject a specialized formula to deliver your specific dose of hormones.
Pellet Therapy
Pellet therapy is a form of BHRT that uses a small pellet to consistently deliver beneficial effects. Your specialist will make a small incision near your hip and insert several small pellets subcutaneously, with women receiving approximately one to two pellets, and men receiving between two and ten pellets. These pellets are approximately the size of a grain of rice and are typically plant-based. Your specialist can customize your pellet to contain estrogen, testosterone, or estrogen blockers, but they may also combine them, depending on your personal needs.
Intramuscular Injections
Intramuscular injections are injected directly into the muscles. Many doctors and medical professionals consider injections to be one of the most effective forms of BHRT as they allow hormones to be absorbed efficiently into the bloodstream, and some patients begin noticing improvements within the first few days.
Results

Once your body has acclimated to your new dose of hormones, you will be able to enjoy the full results of your BHRT treatment. Your exact results will vary depending on the concerns you seek to address, but you can generally expect to experience improvements in your sleep, mood, energy levels, and mental clarity after starting your treatment. You may also notice a heightened libido, enhanced sexual function, improved bone density, and a greater sense of personal comfort overall.
The length of your results will vary, as injections can last for two weeks, and pellets can last between four and six months. When you reach the end of this period, you can return for a maintenance treatment. Depending on your concerns, your specialist may recommend maintaining your regimen as part of a more comprehensive, long-term treatment.
Cost of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy in San Jose, California
The cost of your BHRT can vary depending on several aspects of your treatment plan, as well as the overall extent of your needs. Once your specialist meets with you and establishes your treatment plan, they will give you a comprehensive cost estimate. Depending on your specific needs, your insurance provider may cover part of your treatment. Our team can help you navigate any insurance needs, but we recommend reaching out to your provider beforehand for a full understanding of your benefits and coverage options.
